Trust & Experience

What inspired you to start this roofing company over 20 years ago?

It was initially a bit of an accident. While I was working in the Architecture industry (various companies), I saw an ad in the paper for a roofing company hiring and I took action. In a short time, I became employed by them and for the next two and half years I worked in every position short of managing and running the entire company. I worked around the clock, even on Saturdays, and by the second year, I learned that I had already qualified to take the state exam to become a licensed roofing contractor myself because of the graduate degree I had earned in 1997 from the University of California for Architecture.

What makes our company different from other roofing contractors in Northern California?

I would say different than most companies in the whole of the United States. Honestly, we have been doing it right from the beginning for over two decades, in the sense that we have always been ‘Green Builders’ first…

What does being a “Green Builder” actually mean in your day-to-day work?

Conservation and efficiency are the top priorities. If possible, first fix then consider replacement.

What values have guided your company since the beginning?

See above…

What do you think customers appreciate most after working with your team?

The money they have saved, the thoroughness of our work and the fact that we have taken care of most or all of their exterior (also possibly interior) periphery issues depending on the budget they had.

Roof Condition & Decision-Making

How can a homeowner tell if their roof needs restoration instead of replacement?

Restoration is all about opportunity. To put it in the most general sense, restoration is all about getting the service done in a timely manner. For many roofing systems that window falls in say a period between the 12th and 25th year of the life of the roof, there are exceptions. Generally speaking, the earlier you do it, the more affordable the project will be. It’s a total Science!

What are the earliest warning signs of roof damage that people often ignore?

Shingle damage, granular losses, dry rot due to small or larger leaks, there are many signs. Just try not to neglect your roof, without any debate it is the number one component that protects your likely biggest life investment.

What factors determine whether a roof can be restored successfully?

Mostly timing as mentioned above and of course the actual roof inspection and estimation phase determine the best course of action.

When is it more cost-effective to replace a roof rather than restore it?

When you have waited too long, restoration would not actually be an option any longer. In an utter majority of those situations, you will be paying a higher cost/year when replacement has to happen. The environmental impact is also at least twice as much in the case of replacement so in a nutshell, it is never more cost-effective to replace the roof, there may just not be any other option.

How quickly should homeowners act once they notice a roofing issue?

As quick as their budget allows but considering the roof protects the whole investment, make it a priority. On average, we recommend an inspection and tune up on the whole roof at least once every ten years or more often depending on the type of roofing system you have.

Sustainability & Green Building

How does roof restoration reduce environmental impact compared to replacement?

In a nutshell, mostly a savings of material but also issues related to total embodied energy involved in doing the different procedures.

What eco-friendly materials or techniques do you use in your projects?

The restoration work often involves material replacement and repairs, hydro cleaning of the entire building and applying specialty coatings to seal the work done properly.

How can a roof improve a home’s energy efficiency?

The adding of ventilation systems, the possible application of protective and reflective coatings and even the saving of materials in completing projects are some of the procedures that can be considered as ‘improving a home’s energy efficiency’.

What does “Sustainable Roofing” mean for homeowners in practical terms?

To consider to not throw out your existing roofing system in a landfill. It can likely last a number of more decades. As I say to many up and coming customers, the conventional roof replacement that many owners perform is good for the roofing industry; the suppliers and contractors. The eco-friendly procedures we offer, are best for homeowners pocketbook and Mother Nature. After more than 25 years in the roofing business, the results speak louder than ever…

Are there local or state incentives for choosing environmentally friendly roofing solutions?

There usually is on the solar side but as far as roofing materials and restoration procedures, that would be pretty rare.

Cost & Value

How does the cost of restoration compare to a full roof replacement?

Depending on the situation, I estimate that the savings as far as overall cost per year is between 10-30% depending on whether you have an existing solar system.

What are the biggest factors that affect the cost of a roofing project?

Size, access, slope, materials chosen and so on…

How can homeowners avoid overpaying for roofing services?

Put on your thinking cap and have an open mind to do what is best overall instead of just blindly copying your neighbor. Yes folks, intelligence often makes money!

What should customers look for in an estimate to know they’re getting real value?

The details and also bigger picture issues of what you are actually getting.

How does investing in quality roofing save money long-term?

Sustainability…

Process & Expectations

What happens from the first inspection to the final walkthrough?

We charge a small fee for the initial onsite inspection (we offer free telephone consultation) which we credit back if our proposal is accepted. Then we place the customer on the production schedule and often can complete the project within 30-60 days, although the typical job itself, usually takes 1 to 5 days for most roofing projects. We ask for flexible scheduling. We get the work done and we end with a quality control step where we finalize everything, collect payment and then issue the warranty as in the case of the larger Full-Restoration or Full-Replacement projects.

How long does a typical roof restoration or replacement take?

See above.

How do you minimize disruption to homeowners during the project?

We are very communicative regarding scheduling but as far as the roofing work goes, since it is done on the outside of the building, it is generally not very disruptive. Generally speaking, we do ask for the driveway to be kept clear as to protect vehicles and other property.

What should homeowners do to prepare before work begins?

Make sure sensitive plants and belongings are clear and/or protected.

How do you communicate progress and updates during the job?

Mostly telephone, text and sometimes emails.

Reliability & Long-Term Care

What kind of warranties or guarantees do you offer?

We have standard warranties anywhere from 1 year to 3 to 6 to 10 to 15 depending on the situation. For example for our Asphalt Shingle Full Roof Restoration, we offer a 10 year warranty. All of our warranties have terms and some limitations like any warranty from any company.

How long should a restored or replaced roof last?

Typically in the case of restoration, about ten years before you may have an option to repeat the restoration (depending on the shape of the system at that time). For new roofs, the range is wide, say 10 years for some low slope systems up to 50 years or more for some masonry options.

What maintenance should homeowners do after the project is complete?

For example, our Asphalt Shingle Full Roof Restoration requires a specific tune up in the 6th year for the warranty to remain valid. We do this work at a reduced rate as part of the Agreement. However, typically owners who are not in the know as to the science of maintenance, mostly only clean their gutters to keep rain water flowing, they do not yet know of better procedures that result in overall savings and protection.

How often should a roof be inspected to prevent major issues?

No longer than 10 year intervals.

What should a homeowner do if they notice a problem after the work is done?

It never really happens. We literally have had only one or two callbacks in nearly 22 years of providing service to Bay Area owners and at least one of them was due to faulty work of others. My only known leak is a detailing error I made on my own rebuilt residence in a stairway that goes to the vegetative roof.
